Internet links

The following sites  are some of the more useful as starting points for research for this particular assignment.  This is by no means an exhaustive list, and many of the sites listed are particularly good in providing links to other related sites.  This list will be added to throughout the term, so remember to update this page regularly.

If you find a link that is not working, please let me know.

As a starting point for general overview and link sites, see some of the links in  the miscellaneous section at the end.

Doughboy Center:  The Story of the American Expeditionary Forces

A mix of secondary materials and primary documents which cover most aspects of the American military effort in Europe.  Of particular note in this site is the   letters, diaries, and biographies section which contains more than thirty personal accounts of the American war experience.  For example see the diary of Bugler Wayne Desilvey  at this site.

Life at Camp Funston

An extensive collection of letters from a soldier posted in the US during the war.  An interesting collection of letters.

Letters Home From the Front

An extensive collection of letters from an American soldier to his sweetheart from 1917 to 1919.

Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1830 to 1930

This is an absolutely excellent site for primary materials.  The site is divided by subject projects and three projects in particular are of value for this course.  For an interesting aspect of the peace movement prior to America's entry into the war see Women's Peace Movements to European Capitals, 1915.  For the debate over the expansion of the American military and its impact on the peace movement, see Pacifism vs. Patriotism in Women's Organizations of the 1920s.  Also for the 1920s see the project on the Women's International League of Peace and Freedom and Right-Wing Attacks, 1923-31.

British Posters of World War I

A collection of 25 posters organized and introduced as an online exhibition by the Georgetown University Library.

Hellfire Corner

Online articles and links to other WWI sites.  The site is oriented to the British and European experience and most of the sites contained are of a secondary nature.  The links page is useful.

German Historical Museum: Poster Collection

The poster collection for World War I is only part of the 60,000 posters covering German history from approximately 1890 to the present.  A fascinating site worth a visit.

The Canadian Great War Homepage

An eclectic site with some good documents and links.  A good starting point for Canadian material.  See in particular Letters Home, a collection of letters of varying content and quality from ten soldiers. Also of interest might be the poems by Robert Dorman.

Canada and the First World War

A good starting point for the Canadian experience, produced by Veterans Affairs.  Of particular value might be the Diaries and Letters  link.  Through that link can be accessed the 1918 diary of Private Charles Bottomley, which has some interesting detail although overall it is thin in content.  Also of interest at that link is the 1918 letter of Captain Hutcheson.

Jack Turner's War

A collection of 200 indexed photographs of the homefront and war experiences of one Canadian.  Produced with the assistance of the Canadian government, it is a well done site with explanatory articles (secondary marterial) and further links.  Through the links can be accessed the 1916-18 Diary of Robert MackayThe  Mackay diary is a good example of the nature of many WWI diaries, which, while they may contain some interesting detail, tend to be quite impersonal and terse.

Punch
An online edition of Punch Magazine for the war years.

Miscellaneous and General Sites

Trenches on the Web

This is probably the largest and most eclectic of the WW1 sites.  The orientation of the site is more British and European, but there is some relevant American material.

World War 1 Document Archive

A massive site of primary documents, commentary articles, and further links for WW1.  It can be searched by year or topic.  An excellent site for ww1 material, but the American content is limited.

World War I

A very extensive set of links to almost any aspect of the war.  The material is global in nature, and the sites linked are of varying usefulness and quality, but it could serve as a starting point for some topics

Hellfire Corner

Online articles and links to other WWI sites.  The site is oriented to the British and European experience, but there is also some other materials available as well.

WWI: The Spartacus Internet Encyclopedia

A useful internet source for providing overview background on personalities and events during WWI, as well as some limited documents.  A good starting point for background but without much depth.  Not suitable as a research source.

Art of the First World War

A joint exhibition of some of the major museums of Europe.  A good exhibit and well worth  a visit to examine a different perspective on the war.  Another good source for the art of WWI is the online collection from the Imperial War Museum in London.

Images of the Great War

A site containing several hundred images, primarily from German sources.
